We Approach The Altar Only In Darkness

BILL HERRICK It is a world where Christianity was not thought, an olde world that continues to age. Creatures of the sea exist, and those of the night, weighing heavy on the mind. It is a fishing village by the sea in the North, a working towne. It is a place where men drink hard, a cellar dwelling, dank and dark. It is a sound in the corner of the room, singing celebratory and saddened tales of the land. It is Crawl Below... dark, acoustic folk hymns inspired by New England lore, delivered masterfully.

Ghordo Only the inner workings of Crawl Below could so intricately combine Koji Igarashi, Lovecraft, and the feeling you get when you see a building that used to be something but is now just there. Like the call the protagonist follows, this is a deeply intoxicating and uneasily seductive invitation to something beyond initial perceptions. Favorite track: Something So Wrong.

Summoned to fulfill your role In the village by the sea The crashing waves beyond the hills bring back unlived memories Come forth, come forth O Congregants Come forth, The ritual’s begun Come forth, come forth You’ll never leave the shadows Where you came from Aldebran crowns the decayed spire While daylight slowly retreats Gravestones peak through falling snow As we move through the cobbled streets Come forth, come forth O Congregants Come forth, The ritual’s begun Come forth, come forth You’ll never quite leave the shadows Where you came from Silent hymns to the nighted shore Torchlight where the shadows grow long Beneath this church that is a church no more The ancient rites live on

Crawl To You 02:50
Underneath the falling sky I crawl to you Until the ancient stars collide I crawl to you As if the day would never come We blindly danced Unaware our moment Was slipping past May the oceans rise above This blackened sand But I’d endure the hateful sun To drown in you again Until your shadow consumes me I reach out only for you No matter the eyes of witness Oh Depthless One I’ll crawl to you I’ll crawl to you I crawl to you Until the waters flood the earth Once again I’ll wait for you beneath the waves Come the end As the currents cease to flow And ebb away Return with me to realms below Where glory awaits Underneath the falling sky I crawl to you Until the ancient stars collide I crawl to you

I stumbled into the churchyard under my first moonlit sky Leaving all that I’d ever known From outside, damned to haunt the earth Rejected by the light The reflection doesn’t lie Revelers flee my face, and this inhuman shape Out from catacombs below From my brightest moment To my very blackest convulsion of despair Now I ride With the mocking and friendly ghouls of night The reflection doesn’t lie

You have not seen what I have seen Salvation from the deep Up from fathoms below He calls to us in our sleep His kingdom waits beneath Amongst his chosen dreamers We chant his name Deniers and believers (We) all die the same Let the rites be shown When he’s enthroned Mankind will be swept aside Only the swamp cult knows His power grows with every sacrifice
6.
May your lantern find the path by the highway side That leads to the creaking wrought iron gate strangled with vines Under the moonlit glow Weave your way through the stones Come to the graveyard down by the swamp Descend the steps to us Welcome to a place where the night never ends To our necropolis To our necropolis If you could only see what we See beneath your world We await your company As the wings of death unfurl Pry the slab aside You’ll know when you’ve arrived Turn your back on the sun Don’t close the crypt on us

Encircle Me 01:54
Encircle me Vector of madness In your miasma of doubt Encircle me Unbridled chaos Cleanse this abhorrent plain Encircle me Agents of indifference Swallow us whole and swarming Encircle me Gulfs of outer darkness Infinitesimalize me Encircle me In tendrils of despair And drag me beneath the waves Convince me Prophets of hope Of anything

Psychopompos 00:40
Lyrics from the poem Psychopompos by HP Lovecraft.

Like plague he descends To shatter myth, to bring about the end He inverts the modern rites He watches truths ignite And smiles in the fire light I’ve been turned from your light for so long I’ve become something so wrong And I no longer belong He comes to desecrate all that came before He’s here to incinerate all that came before He lives to annihilate all that came before I’ve been burned by their light for so long We’ve become something so wrong But soon it will all be gone

They speak of cloven hoof prints Found in the dirt In hushed conversation That and much worse Ask the boy what he saw Chased through moonlit fields And what they found in the house Ask about the bones In the hubris of daylight These cemetery trees Feed on the ancient dead Sundwellers on my tomb Speak of things best left unsaid The wind whispers through the window overhead If memories of faces Trapped in the glass Survive through the centuries What of the unseen? In the swirl of a thousand shapes I writhe
